Wi-Fi + Cellular iPads support eSIM for data connectivity, and the setup process follows the same pattern as iPhone: open Settings, navigate to Cellular Data, and add a plan via QR code, carrier app, or manual code. The key practical difference from iPhone is that iPad cellular plans are data-only — there is no phone number, and cellular voice calls are not supported over the iPad’s mobile line.
iPad Pro (M4), iPad Air (M2), iPad mini (A17 Pro, 2024), and iPad (A16, 2024) are eSIM-only — they have no physical SIM card slot. Earlier Wi-Fi + Cellular models support both a physical SIM and an eSIM. Wi-Fi-only iPad models have no SIM hardware at all and cannot use any cellular plan.
For background on how eSIM technology works, see What Is an eSIM?. For a full list of compatible iPad models, see eSIM-Compatible Devices and How to Check Yours.
Which iPads Support eSIM
Only Wi-Fi + Cellular models include SIM hardware. Within that category, eSIM support depends on the generation.

Wi-Fi-only models: do not have any SIM hardware. Even if the model name looks identical to a cellular model, a Wi-Fi-only iPad cannot use eSIM or any mobile plan.
eSIM-only models (iPad Pro M4, iPad Air M2, iPad mini A17 Pro, iPad A16, and potentially future models): have no physical SIM slot. All cellular plans must be activated via eSIM. If you are in a region where a carrier does not yet support eSIM provisioning, you cannot fall back to a physical SIM card.
To confirm whether your specific iPad model supports eSIM, go to Settings > Cellular Data. If the menu includes an option to Add eSIM or Add Data Plan, the device supports eSIM. If there is no Cellular Data menu at all, the device is a Wi-Fi-only model.
iPad eSIM vs iPhone eSIM: Key Differences
Understanding what iPad eSIM can and cannot do prevents surprises when you sign up for a plan.
| Feature | iPhone eSIM | iPad eSIM |
|---|---|---|
| Data | Yes | Yes |
| Voice calls over cellular | Yes | No |
| SMS / phone number | Yes | No |
| Dual eSIM (two active at once) | Yes (iPhone 13 and later) | No |
| Travel eSIM compatibility | Yes | Yes |
| Carrier plan availability | Broad | Narrower — not all carriers offer iPad plans |
Data-Only Plans
iPad cellular plans are structured as data-only. The device connects to the mobile network for internet access, but it does not have a phone number. You cannot receive a voice call on the iPad’s cellular line, and SMS messages cannot be received on that line either.
Voice and video calling on iPad is available over the internet via FaceTime, WhatsApp, Skype, and similar apps — these use data (Wi-Fi or cellular), not the cellular voice channel.
No Dual eSIM
Unlike iPhone 13 and later, which support two simultaneously active eSIM profiles, iPad supports only one active eSIM at a time. You can store multiple eSIM profiles on the device and switch between them in Settings, but only one can be active at any given moment. There is no iPad equivalent of iPhone’s dual-eSIM configuration.
For an explanation of how dual eSIM works on iPhone, see Dual SIM Setup on iPhone: Complete Configuration Guide.
Carrier Availability
Not every carrier that supports iPhone eSIM also offers a dedicated iPad plan. Some carriers allow you to add an iPad as a secondary device on an existing account (sometimes called a companion plan or connected device plan), while others sell standalone iPad data plans. Check your carrier’s device plan options, as the iPad plan section is often separate from the phone plan section on carrier websites.
Before You Start
Before adding an eSIM to your iPad, confirm the following:
1. Confirm your iPad is a Wi-Fi + Cellular model with eSIM support. Open Settings. If a Cellular Data menu is present, the device has cellular hardware. Within that menu, look for Add eSIM or Add Data Plan to confirm eSIM is supported.
2. Confirm your iPad is carrier-unlocked. Go to Settings > General > About and look for a Carrier Lock field. If it shows No SIM restrictions, the device is unlocked. A carrier-locked iPad can only use plans from the locking carrier. Contact that carrier to request an unlock if needed.
3. Have a Wi-Fi connection ready. Downloading an eSIM profile requires an internet connection. If your iPad is not already connected to cellular data via a physical SIM, connect to Wi-Fi before starting.
4. Obtain a QR code or activation code from your carrier or eSIM provider. Most carriers deliver the QR code by email or display it in their app. Travel eSIM providers typically send it by email and show it in their app after purchase.
How to Add an eSIM to iPad
The steps below apply to all supported Wi-Fi + Cellular iPad models running a compatible version of iPadOS.
Step 1 — Open Settings and Go to Cellular Data
Tap the Settings app, then tap Cellular Data in the left panel.
Step 2 — Follow the On-Screen Prompts to Add a Plan
Tap the option to add a new plan. The exact label varies by iPadOS version; in current iPadOS it may appear as Find a New Plan, Add eSIM, or Add Data Plan. Follow the on-screen prompts to proceed.
If you do not see this option, either your iPad does not support eSIM, or the carrier has disabled eSIM provisioning. Contact your carrier to confirm.
Step 3 — Choose Your Setup Method
iPad offers three ways to add an eSIM profile:
- Scan a QR code — point the camera at the QR code provided by your carrier
- Use carrier’s app — some carriers offer a direct in-app setup flow
- Enter activation code manually — type the SM-DP+ server address and activation code by hand (select Enter Details Manually at the bottom of the scan screen)
The QR code method is the most common for both carrier plans and travel eSIMs.
Step 4 — Scan the QR Code
Display the QR code on a separate screen (laptop, printed page, or another device). The QR code cannot be scanned from the same iPad screen it is displayed on.
Point your iPad camera at the code. When detected, a banner appears: Cellular Plan Detected. Tap Continue. The iPad QR scan flow mirrors the iPhone process — see How to Set Up eSIM on iPhone via QR Code for a detailed walkthrough of each prompt.
If the QR code is in an email on the same iPad: forward the email to another device, open it there, and scan normally — or take a screenshot and display it on another screen.
Step 5 — Confirm and Download
Tap Add Cellular Plan. Your carrier may prompt for a confirmation code sent to your email or via SMS to a linked phone number. Enter it when asked.
The iPad downloads the profile from the carrier’s SM-DP+ server. This typically takes a few seconds to about one minute. When the status shows the plan is active, setup is complete.
Step 6 — Verify the Connection
After installation, return to Settings > Cellular Data and confirm:
- The eSIM plan is listed and shows as Active or On
- The signal indicator in the iPadOS status bar shows bars
Open a browser and load a webpage to confirm data is flowing. For a step-by-step guide to confirming your line is active and what to do if it is not, see SIM Activation: How to Get Your Line Working. If data does not work, see Troubleshooting below.
Adding a Travel eSIM to iPad
A travel eSIM provides data connectivity in a foreign country at local rates, without the roaming charges your home carrier applies. The setup process on iPad is the same as for a domestic plan — scan a QR code in Settings > Cellular Data > Add eSIM.
Before your trip:
- Purchase the travel eSIM from a provider such as Airalo, Holafly, Nomad, or Sabil before departure
- Download the eSIM profile at home on reliable Wi-Fi — do not wait until you land
- The profile installs immediately; activation (the plan’s data clock starting) may be set to begin automatically when you connect to the destination network, or you may need to enable it manually in Settings
At your destination:
- Go to Settings > Cellular Data and ensure the travel eSIM is selected as the active plan
- If you have a home plan also installed (on eSIM-only models or after switching), ensure it is turned off or set to a lower priority to avoid unintended roaming charges
Travel eSIM on iPad is data-only, as with all iPad cellular plans. If you need to receive voice calls or SMS while abroad, those must come through an internet-based app (FaceTime, WhatsApp, etc.) using the travel eSIM’s data.
Use SimFinder Travel to search for travel eSIM plans by destination, filtered to show iPad-compatible options.
Managing Multiple eSIM Profiles
You can store multiple eSIM profiles on your iPad and switch between them as needed — for example, keeping a home plan and a travel plan both installed, then activating the appropriate one.
To manage plans, go to Settings > Cellular Data. Installed profiles appear as a list. Tap a plan to:
- Turn it on or off (without deleting it)
- Rename it for clarity (e.g., “Home Plan”, “Japan Travel”)
- View the plan details or remove it
Switching active plans: only one eSIM can be active at a time on iPad. Enabling a second profile automatically disables the one currently active.
Deleting a profile: once deleted, most eSIM profiles cannot be reinstalled from the same QR code — each code is single-use. Before deleting a travel eSIM, confirm the provider’s reinstall policy. Some providers allow re-download via their app; others require purchasing a new plan.
Troubleshooting
Settings > Cellular Data has no “Add eSIM” option
Two possible causes: the iPad is a Wi-Fi-only model (no SIM hardware), or the iPad is carrier-locked and the carrier has disabled eSIM activation for non-supported plans. If the Cellular Data menu exists but Add eSIM is absent, contact your carrier to verify whether eSIM provisioning is enabled for your plan.
“Unable to Add Cellular Plan” error
This error typically means the QR code has already been used on another device, or the activation code has expired. Request a new QR code from your carrier or eSIM provider. Each QR code is single-use and tied to one device.
eSIM installed but no data
After the profile downloads, verify in Settings > Cellular Data that the plan is toggled on. Confirm that Cellular Data is enabled at the top of the menu. If the plan is on but data is not flowing, check whether the APN settings are correct — some carriers require manual APN configuration. Contact your carrier for the correct APN values.
QR code scan fails
Ensure good lighting and a steady hand. Hold the iPad camera 15–30 cm from the code. If the code is on a screen, adjust screen brightness to maximum. If scanning still fails, use the manual entry option: tap Enter Details Manually on the scan screen and type the SM-DP+ address and activation code from your carrier’s confirmation email.

Apple SIM and the Transition to eSIM on iPad
Earlier Wi-Fi + Cellular iPads shipped with Apple SIM — a removable, reprogrammable SIM card (nano-SIM form factor) that functioned similarly to eSIM in allowing carrier selection without swapping physical cards. Apple SIM was available in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and a small number of other markets (including Germany and Australia) through participating carriers.
Apple SIM was distinct from the built-in eSIM chip. Some iPad models shipped with both: an Apple SIM in the nano-SIM slot and a separate eSIM chip on the motherboard.
As of the current iPad lineup (iPad Pro M4, iPad Air M2), Apple SIM is no longer included. These models use eSIM only, following the same embedded eUICC standard (GSMA SGP.22) used in eSIM-capable iPhones and Android devices.
If you have an older iPad with Apple SIM and are unsure which SIM type is active on your device, go to Settings > General > About. The presence of an EID field confirms that an eSIM chip is present.
