TfW's Railway Fibre Links South Wales Valleys to Vantage Data Centres

Transport for Wales’ fibre arm, ffeibr, announced on 21 August 2026 that its railway-based full fibre network now provides a direct connection between colocation provider Cloud Centres and Vantage Data Centres in South Wales. The link is wholesale infrastructure rather than a consumer product, so there is no new tariff or broadband package for readers to sign up to today. Its significance is structural: fibre laid alongside the Core Valley Lines during Metro electrification is now carrying commercial traffic into a major data centre campus, which over time gives ISPs and network operators another route into the Valleys.

What was announced

According to the announcement on the Transport for Wales news site, the ffeibr network now links Cloud Centres Networks directly to Vantage Data Centres, giving businesses on the network a path to cloud computing and AI infrastructure hosted at the campus. Nation.Cymru, reporting on 22 August, described the same development and noted that the network now extends into Cardiff as well as running through the Core Valley Lines corridor.

Transport for Wales did not publish bandwidth, latency or capacity figures, and no pricing was disclosed. ISPreview, which also covered the story on 22 August, likewise reported no speed measurements — so anyone comparing this to a headline consumer speed announcement should treat it as an infrastructure milestone rather than a performance claim.

Why railway fibre matters here

ffeibr’s network was built during the South Wales Metro electrification works, using railway land to reach valley communities where conventional fibre builds are awkward and expensive. That origin story is the whole point of the announcement: it turns a transport asset into telecoms capacity without a separate civils programme.

Guy Reiffer, managing director of ffeibr, framed the change in terms of location rather than raw speed. Access to the highest-quality digital infrastructure has historically been concentrated around major cities, he said, and connecting sites like Church Village to resilient, high-performance networks “changes how and where they choose to invest.” Adam Price MS, quoted in the Transport for Wales release, described it as an example of “using the assets we already have, to build the infrastructure we need for the future.”

Background: how ffeibr got here

ffeibr launched in November 2024, offering wholesale access to the fibre built alongside local railways. Cloud Centres Networks was its first commercial contract, connected in partnership with Cardiff University in 2025. This week’s announcement extends that relationship into a direct data centre-to-data centre link.

TfW Fibre Limited operates as a not-for-profit subsidiary of Transport for Wales, and reinvests its commercial returns into the Welsh public sector — a different model from the commercial altnets that make up most of the UK’s alternative fibre market.

Vantage’s South Wales presence is well established: its Welsh campus, acquired from Next Generation Data, has long been described in industry coverage as one of Europe’s largest, and the company has been expanding in the region. Transport for Wales’ release did not itself break down the campus’s capacity.

What this means for consumers

For mobile and broadband customers in Wales, nothing changes immediately. ffeibr sells to ISPs and network operators via wholesale, so any retail impact depends on whether providers choose to build on the route. The realistic effect over the next few years is more competitive backhaul options for serving valley towns — a precondition for better retail coverage rather than better coverage in itself.
