Opera Adds Travel eSIM to Android Browser: 47 Destinations, 3/5/10GB

Opera has built a travel eSIM into its Android browser. Users can now buy, install and manage a data eSIM for 47 destinations from inside Opera for Android, without a separate eSIM app. The company announced the launch on September 29, 2026. Anyone who travels with an Android phone now has another way to avoid carrier roaming charges, and it comes from an app some of them already use.

What Opera announced

In its press release, Opera calls itself the first company to put an eSIM directly into a web browser. The service covers 47 destinations and connects to 5G where local networks support it.

The eSIM isn’t limited to browsing. It works like any other data eSIM and provides a connection for the whole phone, so messaging, maps and ride-hailing apps can use it too. Android Authority reported the same point in its coverage on the same day. You can set the eSIM up before you leave. Opera says it activates automatically the first time it connects to a network in the destination country, and your plan starts at that point.

Opera says the service is powered by Holiday.com.

Plans, validity and pricing

According to Opera, the plans are:

  • Data sizes: 3GB, 5GB or 10GB
  • Plan validity: 30 days from activation in the destination
  • eSIM validity: 1 year
  • Pricing: varies by destination and plan size

Opera did not publish a full price list in the announcement. It claims its prices are about 33% cheaper than major competitors on average. That figure comes from Opera and has not been independently verified. Check the price for your destination in the app and compare it with a dedicated travel eSIM provider before you buy.

Free 3GB data at launch

Opera is also giving away 3GB of free data, valid for three days. You don’t need to buy a plan, and Opera doesn’t ask for payment details or an email address. The free data is available in 11 markets: the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Canada, UAE, Brazil, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and Poland.

Opera did not announce an end date for the free offer, but it is a launch incentive. The paid plans are the permanent product. The free data may be useful for a short trip or to test the service. For longer stays, one of the paid plans is the more realistic option.

Requirements

To use the Opera eSIM, you need:

  • an eSIM-compatible phone that isn’t locked to a carrier
  • Android 10 or newer
  • the Opera for Android browser

The feature is only available on Android. Opera has not announced an iOS version.

Why it matters for travelers

Opera product manager Tim Lesnik described roaming as “the same problem in a different shape: you pay a disproportionate amount for the same internet you have at home.”

Travel eSIMs have mostly come from dedicated apps and specialist providers. Opera’s launch adds a large consumer app to that market. For travelers, the main benefit is convenience: Opera users can buy and manage a data plan without installing and signing up for a separate service.

Some caution is still worthwhile:

  • Check coverage first. The service covers 47 destinations, so confirm yours is included before you rely on it.
  • Compare prices. Opera’s “33% cheaper” claim is an average across competitors. Prices for a given country and data size can differ.
  • Remember it is data-only. This article’s sources only describe data plans, not a local phone number. Keep your home SIM active if you need to receive calls or SMS codes.
  • Check that your phone is unlocked. Carrier-locked phones are not supported.
